Of all the physical properties of wood its density or its specific gravity, as the ratio of the density of a substance to that of water at the same temperature, was the first to be investigated. The classical study byChevandierandWertheim, “Mémoire sur les propriétés mécaniques du bois” (1848), contains a collection of data from the 18 th and the beginning of the 19 th century. It has been generally assumed that the quality of wood as a building material depends mainly on its density. There is, in reality, a close correlation between mechanical properties, hardness, abrasion resistance, and heat value of wood on the one hand, and density on the other.
