Abstract The temperature dependence of the layer compressional elastic constant B has been studied in five different compounds in the smectic-A phase on approaching the transition to the nematic phase. A universal exponent Φ = 0.4 ± 0.03 has been measured in the critical domain with a crossover to 0.5 for the fifth compound further away from the transition.
