Renewed interest in experimental Coxsackie B viral infection has been brought about by the numerous reports implicating this group of viruses in fatal newborn myocarditis.Y-5 Cardiac lesions had been noted in suckling mice dying of Coxsackie B infections, but such lesions were infrequent and small in extent. Gifford and Dalldorf6 observed that only 3 of 5I (6 per cent) suckling mice developed myocarditis after inoculation with several different types of Coxsackie B virus. Melnick and Godman 7 reported an incidence of myocarditis of 29 per cent in 4to s-day-old mice after intraperitoneal inoculation with the Connecticut-5 strain of Coxsackie Bi. More recently, Grodums and Dempster8 reported that much more frequent and severe cardiac lesions could be induced in slightly older mice; heart lesions were most severe in animals inoculated at I2 to 23 days of age. These workers used the Nancy strain of Coxsackie B3. It was for this reason that this strain of virus and a similar age range of mice were selected in the present study. The purpose of this study was to examine the development of myocardial damage and its relationship to viral multiplication by means of electron microscopy, immunofluorescence and virus assay.
