Complexes containing both cyclopentadienyl and halide ligands were prepared soon after the first report of ferrocene. Historically, the first systems to be de-veloped were those containing more than one cyclo-pentadienyl ring. In the earliest review article on cy-clopentadienyl metal compounds by Wilkinson and Cotton in 1959, 1 only TiCp2X2, ZrCp2X2, VCp2X2, MCp2Br3 (M=Nb, Ta), MoCp2Cl2, and UCp3Cl were reported, although monocyclopentadienyl chemistry was already developed for low oxidation state carbonyl derivatives. By 1964, the list of bis-Cp compounds had been extended to Hf and several rare earth MCp2Cl systems, while the first few mono-Cp systems started to appear, eg CpTiX3, CpTiCl2, CpZrCl3, and CpCrX2. 2 The chemistry of systems containing two cyclopentadienyl rings developed very rapidly while studies
