Everyone seriously interested in Hume’s writings should be planning to acquire the critical editions emerging from the Clarendon Press, after decades of Herculean effort and scrupulous scholarship by the editors and their numerous helpers and assistants. Readers concerned about the cost of this edition need only consider what they typically buy for the same sum. The accolades should not be grudgingly conferred: it is a splendid edition, and one which cannot fail to enrich the findings of future scholars of Hume and his times.Following the pattern of the editions already published–the two Enquiries and the Treatise–this volume contains an Introduction of 135 pages that outlines the history of the eight editions published during Hume’s lifetime, some juxtaposed passages of the Treatise book 2 and the Dissertation on the Passions (hereafter DP), and an outline of the contemporary English-language reception of the works–chiefly of the Natural History of Religion (hereafter NHR). The 87 pages of critical texts are themselves followed by over 200 pages of editorial annotations, a brief essay on the intellectual background, a Biographical Appendix, book reference lists and indexes. All of the variations and changes in the compared editions are listed, along with the principles adopted in establishing the critical text. The resulting critical text is a pleasure to use and consult: it is clean, easily referenced by section and line number, and must now be adopted as the standard edition for scholars.
