EVERAL YEARS ago the nation was gripped by what appeared at first to be a nursing shortage. Hospitals, particularly those in inner cities, reported turnover and vacancy rates so high that they were forced to run dangerously short-staffed and even to close beds. In some hospital units nurses from temporary agencies out-numbered staff nurses. As occurs with most crises, things were not what they appeared to be. There was and is no nursing shortage.
