The two-dimensional crystallization of chiral malic acid on a Cu(110) surface has been studied in ultrahigh vacuum with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy, low energy electron diffraction, scanning tunneling microscopy, and density functional theory. Two principle adsorbate modes were identified, in which either one or both carboxylate groups interact with the surface after deprotonation. Eleven ordered phases have been observed, most of them not in perfect long-range order and rather coexisting with other structures. The substrate becomes rearranged due to the interaction with the malic acid molecules. The results are discussed with respect to previous studies performed on tartaric acid and succinic acid on this surface.
