Abstract: Highly monodisperse polyacrylamide microparticles were directly prepared by dis-persion polymerization in aqueous alcoholic media initiated by 2,2 -azobisisobutyronitrile usingpoly( N -vinylpyrrolidone) as a steric stabilizer. Monomer conversion was studied dilatometrically andpolymer molecular weight was determined viscometrically. The hydrodynamic diameter of polymerparticles and its distribution were measured with a dynamic laser light scattering spectrometer. Thenumber of the nuclei produced in the early stage of the polymerization was found to be constant duringthe remainder of the polymerization. The influences of various polymerization parameters, such as ini-tiator concentration, monomer concentration, stabilizer content, medium polarity, and polymerizationtemperature on the particle size and size distribution were systematically investigated. 2003 Society of Chemical Industry Keywords: dispersion polymerization; polyacrylamide; monodisperse particles; particle size and its distribution;water-soluble polymers
