A volatile excretion from Tribolium castaneum and T. confusum was isolated and found to consist largely of p ethyl-benzo-quinone. It is responsible for the pink color of flour beetle-infested flour, the production of the color being due to the reaction of simple p benzoquinones with amino compounds. The excretion may play a part in the remarkable population control in crowded cultures of Tribolium. The u.-v. absorption spectra in ethanol of benzo-, toluo-, ethyl-, and thymoquinone were found to have max. at 242, 245, 246, and 255 mu, respectively, and max. 13800, 16000, 16500 and 20,000, respectively. The u.-v. spectra of several hydro-quinones are also recorded.
