In their new Du et al analyzed serum-derived exosomes from 385 patients with schizophrenia (SZ) and 332 healthy controls from 4 independent cohorts. They found that 25 exosome-associated metabolites, such as those enriched in glycerophospholipid metabolism, could be utilized as biomarkers to distinguish SZ patients from controls with very high accuracy. The analysis of drug-free patients suggests that the exosome-associated metabolite changes are not affected by medications. the utility of exosome-associated in the as biomarkers to distinguish SZ patients
