Summary There is disagreement over the classification of two species of Stylosantlies, a genus which contains a number of important tropical pasture legumes. It has been argued that the Old World species Stylosanthes fruticosa and the New World Stylosanthes scabra should be reduced to a single species on the basis of their close morphological similarity, despite differences in agronomic characteristics. RAPDs, a method of producing genetic finger-prints using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), was employed to analyse genetic distances within and between the two taxa. Phenograms generated from this data suggest a degree of differentiation between them, although whether at the specific or sub-specific level could not be determined.
