The article presents a discussion of Great Britain's present circumstances in a historical setting illuminated by early 20th century commentaries on war, peace and cosmopolitan responsibility, and by mid-20th-century speculations on race and racism which have continuing links between racism, nationalism and imperialism in the age of extraordinary rendition. The author concludes that conviviality may yet become legitimate goals in a larger strategy for bringing British citizenship to life.
