Biological material is found ubiquitously during a forensic investigation. Currently the focus of an examination is primarily on human biological material to provide a link between items and to identify the source of the human material. Much associative evidence may exist in the form of botanical, microbial or non-human animal material that is either overlooked or not examined. Further there are crimes that are specifically against animals, such as the trade in endangered species. This paper covers many of the uses of DNA in animal and wildlife crimes. The scope of the paper does not cover the wide area of botanical and microbial examinations that are possible but will focus on the use of DNA to identify a species or to link a sample to a particular organism.
