We are grateful to Kieran Rose and Cos Michael for their detailed and considered response1 to our article, originally entitled ‘‘The Rising Tide of ‘Gerontautism’.’’2* Our intention in the article was to highlight the increase in research on autism in older adulthood (while still falling way behind that on younger ages), with the ‘‘rising tide’’referring to this rise in publications, and the term ‘‘gerontautism’’proposed as a novel keyword for this field of study. The article was independently conceived of and led by a collaboration between an autistic PhD student and a nonautistic PhD student, who have a wealth of research experience. Their ideas and research plans have been supported and championed by their PhD supervisor. We are extremely sorry for the offense inadvertently caused by the title and the proposed keyword. In response to the views expressed on Twitter, which are eloquently expressed in Rose and Michael’s response, we immediately requested amendments to our article. Specifically, we have changed the title to ‘‘Older Age Autism Research: A Rapidly Growing Field, but Still a Long Way to Go’’to avoid any possible misunderstanding and any unintended connotations. We have removed any mention of ‘‘gerontautism’’and instead highlight that novel keywords to aid literature searching in this area should be decided by and with the autistic community. We hope that the use of novel keywords would make research about aging and autism more accessible to a wider audience. We were at fault for not consulting more widely before publishing the article in its original form; we hope we (and particularly the senior author) have learnt an important lesson from the social media response and the points raised in Rose and Michael’s response letter.We hope that these changes will allow readers to take from the amended article the key findings, which are that older adults on the autism spectrum have been neglected in research until very recently, but that publications on their specific needs are increasing. Our intention in this study is to raise awareness and improve the lives of autistic people in older age; we deeply regret having upset anyone in the autistic community.
