ARCINOGENIC polycyclic aromatic hydrocarC bons have been identified in polluted urban atmosphere by investigators in this country and abroad.a#4.*3~14,*1 An evaluation of the significance of these agents in the pathogenesis of human lung cancer is justified by the following observations: (1) residents of urban communities have repeatedly been shown to be at greater risk to the development of lung cancer than are those in rural areas;2. 5. 9s l 7 (2) the increase in urbanization and intensity of air pollution that has accompanied the industrialization of society is temporally consistent with a suggested etiological relationship between atmospheric carcinogens and the increase in pulmonary cancer; 10 (3) the carcinogenic agents present in contaminated air have been demonstrated to occur in a physical state compatible with their deposition and retention within the lung.’. 12.16 T h e primary site of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons is on soots present as atmospheric contaminants.14~ l8 Despite the failure of attempts to correlate exaggerated carbon content of human lungs with an increased manifestation of pulmonary cancer,’. 11 the hazards created by the existence of carcinogenic hydrocarbons in the atmosphere stress the need for studying their chemical and biological fate subsequent to their respiration by man. It is well to emphasize that this environmental source cannot be regarded as the sole factor responsible for the observed increase in lung cancer. The ubiquitous distribution of carcinogenladen soot in contaminated air results in its
