The study of variable-shape wave energy converters has been receiving more attention recently. In this work, a dynamic model for axisymmetric Variable-Shape Buoy Wave Energy Converters is derived within the context of Lagrangian mechanics. The assumed modes method is used to approximate the flexible modes of the buoy. Passive control is adopted that implements a bang-bang control algorithm. A numerical simulation case study is presented that demonstrates the utility of the developed model in studying the behavior of the flexible shell buoy and the overall performance of the spherical Variable-Shape buoy Wave Energy Converter.
