One of the most distinctive and important features of flames and detonations in pre-mixed combustible gases is the fact that they propagate at well-defined speeds. The frequent reference to these propagation speeds as 'eigenvalues' makes this point well. So, if this is the case, and combustion waves propagate in this distinctive way, what is meant by the designation 'fast flame' and how does such an entity fit into the frame whose character is so well outlined by the eigenvalue-like speeds just referred t{sup 0} What, too, is the role for waves in this context This article is attempt to provide some answers to these general questions. As with most questions it is first of all necessary to describe rather carefully the context in which they are asked. In doing this it will quickly become clear that answers exist at present for only a limited range of conditions. (author).
