Because mental illness is increasing among the Negro population, it is important that psychiatrists recognize their responsibility to this group and acquire some technique for handling them. The author presents some aspects of the cultural background of the Negro patient, and mentions a popular theory explaining the origin of prejudice, as well as some of the effects of prejudice on Negro social personality. This paper recognizes the need for an improved social system based on justice and fairness to minorities. It is intended, however, to impress the therapist with the need to ultimately draw the mentally sick Negro patient away from his rationalizations. The patient should then be ready to face the core of his hidden problems which are the same kinds that haunt, enslave, torture and degrade men of all races.(PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved)
