Chiru or Tibetan antelope are poached for their fine wool termed shahtoosh. Shahtoosh shawls can cost from US$800 to US$5,280). The trade in shahtoosh products is illegal as the species has been recognised as a threatened species. SEM analysis of hair was done in order to measure the extent of blending of shahtoosh with hair from other Himalayan species. The analysis revealed a characteristic scale pattern of guard hairs of shahtoosh of regular mosaic with smooth margin. The wool hair display the scare type similar to guard hair but they are single scale.
