Starting from the assumption that the change in magnetization in ferromagnetis occurs by 180°-domain wall displacements, a calculation is made of the characteristic quantities max KW(z) and (KW is the interaction force between lattice defects and a domain wall at 0 ≦ z ≦ L3). The coercive force Hc and the initial susceptibility Xa are then calculated. The method involves the theory of homogeneous random functions. In contrast to the theory of statistically independent random variables as used by Trauble in the statistical analysis of domain wall movements, this method does not require any special additional assumptions, in particular in the calculation of Xa. The present theory allows the effects of arbitrary dislocation arrangements on Hc and Xa to be obtained in a very straight-foreward manner. The magnitude and temperature dependence of Hc and Xa are discussed for dislocation arrangements consisting of dislocation loops that are not correlated in position and stage. The correlation length, which is a measure for the product HcXa, is found to be dependent in general on deformation. This is contrary to the results of the previous theory of coercive force and initial susceptibility.
