Underemployment in Rural South Vietnam: A Comment and a Discussion of Family Labor

In a recent article for this journal, Stroup and Gift attempt "to show that the observed marginal product of labor in South Vietnamese rice production is virtually zero" (p. 417).1 The data they adduce to support this conclusion are production-function labor coefficients that are not significantly different from zero.2 However, we believe Stroup and Gift's conclusions are unwarranted for two reasons. In the first place, they have used only familylabor instead of total-labor input. That is, they have excluded all hired labor. In the second place, their measure of family-labor input is actually the sum of family labor on rice plus family labor on secondary crops, instead of only rice labor.
