The article investigates the effects of white background on hypermelanosis on the blind side in Japanese flounder in Ofunato, Japan. The study is aimed at developing a method to prevent the staining type pigmentation in flounders reared in a tank through the induction of endogenous melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH). It uses one million Japanese flounder larvae, which were reared in a green tank at Iwate Sea Farming Association and were fed with rotifers and commercial pellets. The results found that there is a correlation between tank color, the occurrence of staining and MCH production. Moreover, the results indicate that hypermelanosis on the blind side was diminished with the white background.
