Research in exercise and pregnancy continues to demonstrate marked benefits for both mother and fetus; however, the type, intensity, frequency, and duration of the exercise appear to be important determinants of its beneficial effects. Maternal benefits include improved function and mental state, limited weight gain, easier labor, quick recovery, and improved fitness. Fetal benefits include decreased body fat, improved stress tolerance, and advanced neurobehavioral maturation. Currently, the offspring are leaner and appear to have a better neurodevelopmental outcome.
