The optimization of reproductive behavior in a randomly varying environment is represented by a simplified model. Two examples are discussed: the optimal reproducing fraction in animals and the optimal germinating fraction in seeds and spores. The results include the conditions for dominance between the 2 choices, and a method for computing an optimal mixed strategy. Some numerical examples are included. The main finding is that a mixed strategy, i.e. when only a fraction of the population reproduces, becomes optimal when the variability of the outcomes of reproducing and of not reproducing increases relative to the difference between their means.
