Agonistic behavior of woodchucks was studied in natural populations and in pens. Aggressive interaction rate in natural populations was correlated with density and season. Interaction rate, interaction distance, and wounding all indicated decreasing levels of aggressiveness during the summer and early fall even in situations where vegetation night was constant. Pen encounters were characterized by considerably more fighting than were field interactions. Passive avoidance by subordinates was the commonest type of agonistic interaction observed in the field.
