Estrus and superovulation were induced in adult mice (Mus musculus) by the injection of pregnant mares'' serum followed after 40 hours by human chorionic gonadotrophin. Of 695 females, 514 mated in response to the injections; 99% of the treated females ovulated and 75% of those which mated became pregnant.. Degenerated eggs were recovered from the females in addition to normal eggs. Some of the females gave birth to large litters, though some of the pregnancies were not normal. Mean litter size of the treated females was similar to that found after mating during natural estrus. After more than one treatment with gonadotrophins, fewer females mated, ovulated, and became pregnant than after the 1st treatment.
