Manganese chloride dissolved in sea water at concentrations of 8–14 mmaffected all of the measured parameters ofLimuluslateral eye retinular cells;(1) the membrane potential decreased,(2) the latent period of the receptor potential increased,(3) the effective input resistance increased,(4) the magnitudes of componentsC1andC2of the receptor potential decreased but that of componentC3increased,(5) the reversal potential of the receptor potential increased and(6) the magnitude of the reversed receptor potential was markedly reduced. It is proposed that manganese ions exert two effects: one is the reduction of Ca2+influx and the other is a reduction in permeability of the retinular cell membrane.Tetrodotoxin reversibly blocked eccentric cell spike potentials but had no observable effects on those properties of retinular cells that were measured.
