Strains of O group 1Vibrio choleraebiotype El Tor resistant to multiple antibiotics were isolated in Bangladesh: 5% of strains in the first month ofthe seasonal outbreak, but up to 36% by the 4th month. The resistance was plasmid-encoded and 3 R types of resistance were encountered. The resistance spectrum covered ampicillin, kanamycin, streptomycin, spectinomycin, tetracyclines, sulphonamides and trimethoprim. There have been other outbreaks pf cholera caused by strains ofV. choleraein which multiple resistances were encoded by a group C plasmid and it may be that group C plasmids have a special affinity forV. cholerae. Whereas tetracyclines may be indicated in the treatment of patients with cholera, mass prophylaxis with antibiotics may be less acceptable because of the danger of the emergence of resistance.A. B.
