The identification of changes in gene expression has been a goal of modern biomedical research. In an attempt to better understand the physiologic events that control cellular homeostasis, it is essential that one be able to recognize which genes are involved in such events and how they are regulated. The conclusion of the sequencing of the genome of a number of species provides a unique opportunity to decipher molecular control at the cellular level.Modifications of the pattern of expression of a single gene or a set of genes within a specific tissue may provide functional clues in that comparable patterns of gene expression are likely to be associated with similar functions. Therefore, comparative genomics may be viewed as a helpful tool for the understanding of biological phenomena.
