JOHN L. MEYER hen I agreed to serve as respondent for this symposium, I had no idea of the variety of topics that might be submitted. Imagine my surprise to discover that all top three papers analyzed" conversation in interviews," particularly employment or on-the-job-interviews. The discovery was very gratifying to me because interviewing has long been an interest of mine (Donaho $ c Meyer, 1976; Meyer & Donaho, 1979). It has also been one of my contentions that those of us in speech communication should study, research, and teach this important genre (Meyer, 1977).
