AbstractIn an open clinical series, patients seeking treatment for cocaine addiction reported a substantial subjective reduction in cocaine craving associated with carbamazepine treatment. We suggest that cocaine craving may be the behavioral manifestation of kindling, the neuronal supersensitivity induced by cocaine in animal studies. The inherent difficulties in open studies, of subjective phenomena, and reliability of patients with substance abuse disorders, require that caution be observed in applying this preliminary observation to general clinical use.
