Conclusions There are many examples in which two analytical techniques have been combined in order to acquire in-formation both on molecular-size distribution and on chemical composition parameters. These combinations have been used primarily in copolymer studies. In some cases an SEC procedure is used in combination with some other separation process, including thin-layer chromatog-raphy, 11 liquid chromatography, 12 or even SEC with an-other solvent. 13 Also, SEC has been combined with de-tector systems yielding more than one channel of infor-mation, including sequential pairs of unlike detectors14 and multiwavelength diode array detectors. 15 The results of this study show that thermal FFF has very good qualifications for entering this stable of com-bined techniques. In many ways thermal FFF represents an ideal combination with SEC because thermal FFF re-tention is cleanly dividedinto twofactors, one representing the same molecular-size effects that control retention in SEC, and the other representing chemical composition effects. Furthermore, the composition effects appear to be pronounced. Further work is being done in our labo-ratory toestablish this trend for a wider variety of polymer families. The possibility also exists that one thermal FFF pro-cedure could be combined with another using a different carrier solvent. Unlike the combination of twoSEC pro-cedures using two solvents, one would not risk troublesome adsorption effects with the thermal FFF pair. However, again, the feasibility of thisapproach cannot be evaluated
