In order to shorten and simplify the technological process for preparing foamable precursor of aluminum foam sandwich (AFS), this paper describes a new method for preparing foamable precursor of AFS via hot-pressing. A foamable precursor with a denser core layer can be obtained by applying pressure to an aluminum box, formed by placing core layer powders on a flanged aluminum plate and sealing the powders in with other flanged plates. The best preparation conditions were found to involve cold prepressing combined with hot-pressing at 450 °C, both at a pressure of 300 MPa, and holding for 2 min at each pressure stage. The pressure can be reduced to 100 MPa in order to reduce the cost of equipment, but at this pressure, foaming cannot occur at the flanged areas of foamable precursor, due to the low density of the core layer.
