Abstract In England and Wales, there were 535,356 deaths in 2002. The main causes were cancer (26%), cardiovascular diseases (30%) and respiratory diseases (13%). An increasing proportion of deaths from cancer in the second half of the 20th century coincided with increasing awareness that the needs of dying patients were not being met, contributing to the development of palliative care services.
