Companies are confronted by social and societal challenges. Initially, the focus was on the role of multinationals in the perspective of globalization and activities in developing countries or countries in transition; now CS/CSR also includes the social challenges in the homelands ofthe multinationals and the rest ofthe developed world. By Corporate Sustainability and Social Respon sibility companies are integrating social and envi ronmental concerns in their business operations and in their interactions with their stakeholders. The aim is to develop practices for proper economic func tioning that are broader than making profit as such, to contribute to the quality of the in-company community (or communities), the local community (or communities) in which the company is actually functioning, and to contribute to the quality of society at large, also internationally. CS/CSR per forming companies are accountable for their impact on society and transparent about their Triple-P performances (people, planet and profit). Due to a growing awareness of the involvement of corporations in society, companies develop new values, strategies and policies that support their functioning in areas that were once left to others (people and planet). More and more companies ac cept this new position in society and strive to be proficient and transparent in these issues. In this way CS/CSR is about redefining the role of corporations in society. This development has lead to a wide range of approaches that all address social responsi bilities of corporations, and also to a growing interest in indicators for managing social performances. The new business challenge is creating synergies and added value. The business scope is broadened from customer and shareholder orientation to stake holder involvement and societal commitment. The basic conditions for meeting this challenge are co operation leading to win-win solutions, trust and transparency. This also enhances the possibility to distinguish the company, its brand and its products for customers and consumers (a new dimension of orga nizational quality). These are the features of CS/CSR and therefore CS/CSR can become the catalyst for transforming business, creating the next step in busi ness excellence, establishing a business case for CS/CSR and at the same time contributing to the quality of society at large.
