Correspondence www. thelancet. com/infection Vol 18 November 2018 1181 syndrome (SFTS) and associated mortality in China. The authors report a changing epidemiological profile of SFTS diagnosed in laboratories, and a high SFTS-associated case fatality rate, 1 underscoring the urgent need for enhanced surveillance programmes for this disease in China. Although we agree with the conclusions of this Article, we have concerns about the results and their interpretation. First, the generalisability of the findings derived from a single centre study in Xinyang to the whole of China might be limited, although the syndrome originated in Xinyang, where the incidence of SFTS remains epidemic. 1 Thus, translation of findings from the local level to the national level might be premature. Second, to facilitate the prediction of SFTS-associated mortality, the authors created a clinical scoring model based on age, neurological symptoms, and four laboratory indicators. Identical weights (1 to 3) were used to score the variables, which might not accurately reflect SFTS prognosis. We recommend the use of several widely adopted scoring systems, such as the Framingham Study risk score, 2 survival-rate-based scoring system, 3 and the standardised Z-score system. 4 A more accurate scoring system that can better assess SFTS-associated mortality is needed.
