Changes in the redox state of pyridine nucleotides (PN) can be determined by means of fluorescence measurements. When excited with ultraviolet light, NADH and NADPH fluoresce maximally between 440 and 460 nm (3, 7). This method has been used to measure the PN redox state in perfused organs and in vivo (2, 4, 5, 6, 20).
