Examined age-related changes in the temporal memory of rats and investigated whether arginine vasopressin (AVP) administered when the animals were mature (10–23 mo of age) would prevent or reduce these changes when the rats became old (27–30 mo of age). 20 10-mo-old male COBS CD rats received either an intraperitoneal injection of AVP (0.08 pressor units/kg) or saline 20 min prior to each of 30 sessions of training. A 20-sec peak procedure was used. Results show that the AVP had 2 effects on performance: It decreased the variability of the temporal discrimination and shifted the peak time significantly earlier than 20 sec. As the age of Ss in the saline control group (27–30 mo of age) increased, the variability of the temporal discrimination increased and the peak time shifted significantly later than 20 sec. In contrast, Ss that received AVP at 10–23 mo of age did not have an increase in the peak time when they were 27–30 mo old. It is concluded that AVP treatment of mature rats prevents some changes in temporal memory when the animals become old.(11 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
