In our previous paper (Hayakawa et al., 2005 2004) we have proposed the use of fractal dimension for the radar echo maps, which enabled us to infer the self-organization of thunderclouds, leading to the generation of a mesospheric sprite. This paper deals with a particular day of December, 2001, when we observed a lot of sprites in the Hokuriku area (Japan Sea side) in the winter-time. We show that the fractal dimension is an extremely useful quantity to estimate the self-organization process, with some considerations combined with physical and meteorological aspects (fractal analyses at different altitudes, cross-sectional time-height profile of the radar echo images). The temporal evolution of fractal dimension in relation to the generation of sprites can be satisfactorily accounted for by the life-cycle of the thunderstorm.
