We prepared deuterium-labeled 5-deoxystrigol (5DS), a multifunctional plant second metabolite, using a simple set of procedures. The labeled compound contained mainly [3a,4,4,5,5,6'-D-6]-5DS and [D-5]-5DS and did not contain unlabeled 5DS. Therefore, multideuterated 5D5 can be used as an internal standard in liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) assays to quantitate the amounts of 5DS in plants and root exudates.
