OME 10 TO 50) million Arnericans may be obese or overweight (Bray, 1979). Excess weight has been associated with an increased mortality rate. Obese persons are more susceptible to heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipoprotenemia. Pregnancy can be complicated and pulmonary function impaired. There are social consequences to being obese. Obese persons may have difficulty obtaining employment and may find themselves socially ostracized. Physicians often are unsympathetic with obese persons. The major causes of obesity include diet, environment, and genetics. There is controversy about the relative roles of environmental factors and genetic factors in obesity.
