The results of re-examiningP. multocidastrains isolated from North American outbreaks of haemorrhagic septicaemia are reported. The strains were examined by capsule and somatic serotyping methods and DNA fingerprinting. Certain strains which had been presumed to be serotype B.2 were not. A bison strain from the 1965 Montana outbreak was shown to be serotype B:3,4. A dairy calf strain also serotype B:3,4. No distinction could be made between these strains by DNA fingerprinting. Examination of the strain from a 1993 outbreak in beef calves in California showed it was serotype B:2, whereas the strain from an outbreak in beef calves in Canada in 1993 was serotype B:3,4. DNA fingerprinting with the latter two strains indicated that they were distinct from each other, as well as allP. multocidaof the USDA culture collection.
