Hornblende schist was dredged from the Daito Ridge by the cruise (GH 74-7) of Hakurei-maru (1820.6t) in autumn of 1974. The Daito Ridge is one of three WNW-ESE trending ridges in the northwestern Philippine Sea and is situated in the middle of them. The northern ridge is called the Amami Plateau and the southern one the Oki-Daito Ridge. The nerthwestern side of these ridges is cut by the Ryukyu Trench and eastern side is bounded from the Shikoku Basin by the Kyushu-Palau Ridge (Fig. 1). According to the refraction seismic data
