Various alternatives in analyzing somatic cell counts (SCC) as indirect indicator of resistance of mastitis are discussed by integrating knowledge of the dynamics of the infection and statistical methods used in quantitative genetics and epidemiological research. This is done by (1) defining various measures of SCC, (2) identifying non genetic factors of SCC variation, and (3) proposing a new alternative to analyze the data. ___________________________________________________________________________________
