Canary birds fed carotenoid-free rations developed colorless feathers; subsequent addition of various carotenoids produced a return of yellow coloring only with lutein and zeaxan-thin. The coloring matter of feathers from lutein-fed birds showed properties characteristic of extracts of normal canary feathers; analysis of egg-fat and feces-fat showed lutein to be the only coloring matter present. Feathers from zeaxanthin-fed birds contained zeaxanthin, with possibly a decomposition product. Wattles of the goose, duck and hen contain lutein; epidermis of goose-beaks contains carotene. The red wattles of the homing-pigeon contain much zeaxanthin, little lutein. A pigment identical with astacin was prepared from pheasant combs. A carotenoid-free ration was fed to white leghorn hens and subsequently lutein, zeaxanthin, carotene, lycopin and violaxanthin were added to the rations of different groups. Marked increases in the lutein of egg-yolks followed lutein feeding. About 18% of zeaxanthin fed, appeared in the egg-yolks, as compared with but 0.54% for carotene when this was added to the ration. Lycopin and violaxanthin were without appreciable effect on the egg-pigments. || ABSTRACT AUTHORS: F. J. McClure
