Five interneurons that receive auditory input are described in the subesophageal ganglion [SOG] of L. migratoria. The neurons were characterized physiologically and anatomically by intracellular recording and staining with Lucifer Yellow. The newly described neurons all have their somata in the SOG. They are classified into 3 groups: ascending neurons with axons in the circumesophageal connectives (SA1, 2, 3); a local neuron with no axon (SL1); and a descending neuron with its axon in the cervical connective (SD1). The auditory pathway in Locusta appears to be organized into a number of superimposed loops.
