Objective: To investigate the formation rule of ‘eighteen clashes' in clinical applications based on data mining and analyze the compatible characteristics, in order to provide theoretical foundation and warning role for clinical application. Methods: The clinical prescriptions of top three traditional Chinese medicine hospitals in central China were gathered and the compatible characteristics of drugs was analyzed by using association rule mining. Results: The findings of ‘eighteen clashes' clinical application showed that the core drugs of clinical compatibility in the hospital were liquorice root, pinellia tuber, prepared common monkshood branched root, dried ginger, largehead atractylodes rhizome, indian bread and so on, and the utilization frequency of pinellia tuber reached up to 75.88%. The core medicine suits were liquorice root-pinellia tuber, pinellia tuber-prepared common monkshood branched root, prepared common monkshood branched root-liquorice root, liquorice root-dried ginger and pinellia tuber-dried ginger, and utilization frequency of pinellia tuber-prepared common monkshood branched root reached up to 50.93%, and accounted for most of all the research prescriptions. The core component of drugs were pinellia tuber-liquorice root-dried ginger, pinellia tuber-prepared common monkshood branched root-liquorice root, pinellia tuber-liquorice root-baical skullcap root, pinellia tube-largehead atractylodes rhizome-liquorice root and pinellia tube-tangshen-liquorice root, and the utilization frequency of pinellia tuber-prepared common monkshood branched root-liquorice root reached up to 75.07%. Conclusion: Drugs in ‘eighteen clashes' are widely used in clinical, and the applied range of compatibility of these drugs in prescriptions is also wide, which shows that the application of ‘eighteen clashes' do exist in clinical, and it is not the ultimate taboo.
