A global ocean circulation model with locally refined grids is used to give a quantitative result for the annual and monthly mean water transport exchanges between the South China Sea and its adjacent seas. It is shown from the computed results that the water transport exchanges between the South China Sea and its adjacent seas are affected greatly by the monsoon, among them, the water exchange through the Luzon Strait is the largest, that through the section at the southern boundary of the South China Sea is the next largest, and those through the Taiwan Strait, the Mindoro Strait and the Balabac Strait decrease in turn. In addition, the heat transports and salt transports through different straits of the South China Sea are estimated as well.
