METHODThe study was mainly based on data from a group of psychotic patients that had been collected by the US/UK Diagnostic Project in 1966-1968(4). A team of three project psychiatrists studied a consecutive series of 250 patients admitted to a large London mental hospital (Netherne). Each patient was interviewed by a psychiatrist using the seventh edition of the PSE and a history schedule. So far as possible the relatives were also interviewed by a social worker.
