The Therapeutic Apheresis Academy is now an annual 2.5-day educational conference at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia in the fall. As in the past, the September 23–25, 2010 conference focused on knowledge of Therapeutic Plasma Exchange in its traditional or conventional forms and also on the newer and more exciting Selective Apheresis Methods. There was also an interactive ‘‘practical’’ session with handson training and review of Therapeutic Apheresis equipment and information useful to start a new Therapeutic Apheresis Program. The guest faculty represented a highly regarded national level panel with successful Therapeutic Apheresis programs and a multidisciplinary local panel of experts in nephrology (adult and pediatric), hematology, neurology and pathology (including transfusion medicine). This edition of the Journal of Clinical Apheresis contains information as presented at that conference with highlights that include the discussion of the mechanism of development of the most highly regarded set of guidelines in Apheresis medicine by Dr Jeffrey L. Winters, then President of the American Society for Apheresis (Apheresis Medicine State of the Art in 2010: American Society for Apheresis 5th Special Edition of the Journal of Clinical Apheresis) and selected questions from the audience and answers given by the expert faculty. There is also a very interesting review of the current status of the novel use of Apheresis in renal transplantation in addition to the other educational reviews.
